August; Season of Fortification and Light
There is a particular vibrance to August in Maine—a golden, fleeting intensity that demands our full attention. One of my favorite children’s books is Fredrick by Leo Leoni. In it, a tiny field mouse works all summer harvesting "sunlight for the cold dark winter days", "colors, for winter is gray", and "words, for the winter days are long and many, and we'll run out of things to say".
