Title: Retail Manager
Hours: 24-40 per week (1,750 hrs/year)
Salary: $15-$25/hr (depending on experience)
Start date: February 2020
Responsible to: Owner/Director
RUNNING WITH SCISSORS | art studio + community (RWS) recently opened a retail store in its Portland’s East Bayside location. Currently, our retail store offers the works + wares for sale from RWS’s member artists; eventually, the retail store will be expanded from its brick-and-mortar location to an online store that will distribute our local Maine works of art worldwide. With the help of a grant from the City of Portland’s community development assistance program, RWS is looking for a full-time RETAIL MANAGER. Hence, this full-time position is:
funded for 1,750 hours the first year (i.e., 12-month period) – the hours for future years will be determined based on the needs + success of the RWS Retail Store.
subject to semi-annual reporting to the City and the administrative specifics of the grant (e.g., avoid conflicts of interest with political, religious, lobbying, etc. affiliations in the workplace, support affirmative action/EOE policies, etc.).
The successful candidate will have overall day-to-day responsibility for the curation, display, and sale of each artist’s works using RWS branding and standards. The RETAIL MANAGER will:
Assist in final design and build-out of gallery store
Create, implement and maintain a protocol for artist selection, curation, and rotation of space and artist work as well as organize and market openings and events including spring 2020 opening
Work cooperatively with RWS staff and community members in curation and artist selection and other studio operations.
Interact positively with customers and artists alike, by providing superior customer service to both during regular store hours.
Display and promote both the RWS inventory (by working with each artist to articulate their methods, processes, and outputs to customers) and the RWS community (by learning about the thriving collective of 75+ existing member artists and various RWS alumni).
Assist in launching the online store in 2020 while ensuring that the brick-and-mortar store continues to run smoothly and professionally.
Track and maintain:
sales, expenses, and other records needed to reconcile the store’s daily receipts + inventory; and report to third party accountant and work with their team to maintain records as well as
document the hours, expenses and other records needed to report regularly to the City on your position, which is funded through the City of Portland’s business assistance program.
Report regularly to the RWS Owner/Director or her designee. Work collaboratively with other department staff, employees, interns, members, and volunteers.
Tasks and responsibilities:
Space & System Development:
Work with staff and director to develop and maintain gallery systems, artist relation, and procedural protocol
Assist with final space design, build-out, and curation
Curate rotating artist exhibitions and space design.
Coordinate with staff, artists and directors on gallery schedule and events ads well as planning and implementation of tours, special marketing, and display.
Oversee the cleaning and maintenance of space and equipment.
tracks and maintains daily records for sales + inventory, as well as artist profiles + agreements
develops and implements a weekly staffing plan for the store, in consultation with the Owner/Director
possesses superior customer services skills + abilities with both customers/clients + artists within the RWS community
reports to the director and accountant with all sales and inventory requirements
works collaboratively with the featured artists and the Owner/Director to develop and update online retail store
consistently uses RWS branding + templates to display collections + articulate artist’s methods, processes, outputs, etc.
ensures funds are collected prior to shipping inventory to customers/clients
ensures compliance with RWS policies and procedures and the terms of our agreements with vendors, clients, featured artists, visitors and more
maintains meticulous records for the required reporting to the City of Portland on this business assistance grant project
Must possess strong written + oral communication skills, as well as a proficiency with computer programs (Microsoft Windows or Google suite of apps/programs, WordPress or similar website skills, etc.) and proven success with social media and/or advertising
Able to build strong network + relationships (both internal and external) to benefit the RWS Retail Store and the RWS community
Able to serve as a liaison between the customer/client + artist(s), if/when needed, in a professional capacity
Able to lift + carry up to 50 lbs.; multi-task effectively; maintain an organized workspace; and work with multiple projects, teams, events, etc. at any given time; maintain positive relationships
A background in the arts is a plus, but not a requirement for the successful candidate. Experience working with delivering grants and/or reconciling retail sales + inventory are also preferred, but not required.
